Advancing Spiritual Care Through Research

Rush Oak Park Director of Spiritual Care published in JAMA Internal Medicine

Transforming Chaplaincy is proud to pass along news of an important new publication about the role of chaplains. Aoife Lee, DMin, BCC, was lead author on “Using Chaplains to Facilitate Advance Care Planning in Medical Practice,” published online first on January 16 in JAMA Internal Medicine. George Fitchett, Transforming Chaplaincy Co-Director, was a co-author on the study. Read the full research letter on the JAMA site; Dr. Lee’s research found that chaplains are an effective resource for increasing rates of patients with advanced directives. Furthermore, because such conversations are now reimbursable to physicians, chaplains are poised to offer significant financial savings and enriched patient care. Please do take careful note of this vital research, which will help transform chaplaincy in a number of ways.
