Advancing Spiritual Care Through Research

Conference report: New Directions in Spiritual Care Research

Co-sponsored by Transforming Chaplaincy and the Spiritual Care Podcast from Human Media, and supported by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, “New Directions in Spiritual Care Research” took place September 27, 2018 at Rush University Medical Center. This day-long conference featured presentations by emerging chaplain researchers, including several Transforming Chaplaincy Fellows. Responses were provided by senior researchers, including Karen Steinhauser, PhD (Duke) and Deborah Marin, MD (Mt Sinai).

The full conference schedule is available here; presenters are willing to send their materials to interested attendees or those who couldn’t be at the conference. There was a fantastic turnout, with chaplains, researchers, and educators from across the United States attending. As George Fitchett, Transforming Chaplaincy Co-Director, noted in a post-conference message, “we provided a large and attentive audience with an introduction to new research about spiritual care being conducted by a new and talented cohort of chaplain-researchers.” From sparking interest in research to newcomers to the field to helping established researchers identify new projects and methods, the conference was a clear success.
