Advancing Spiritual Care Through Research

Certificate in Spiritual Care Management and Leadership is Launched

Twenty-one chaplain managers and chaplains from across the US gathered at Rush University Medical Center on September 18-20 for the start of the Certificate of Completion in Spiritual Care Management and Leadership. The Certificate is a joint project of Transforming Chaplaincy and Rush’s nationally-rank Department of Health Systems Management. The opening speaker was Larry Gray, MDiv, MHA,  President of Baptist Health, Louisville, KY.

Larry is a former chaplain and CPE educator who worked at Central Baptist Health in Lexington KY for 10 years before beginning his career in healthcare administration. His presentation focused on macro-trends in healthcare and their implications for spiritual care. Faculty from the Health Systems Management department delivered other presentations on human resources, healthcare finance, budgeting and design thinking. The sessions also included time for networking and for participants to begin to plan their Applied Learning Projects (ALPs). The curriculum now shifts to monthly video conferences and webinars. Participants will return in May 2020 for the final in-person sessions and presentations of their ALPs. Response to the initial sessions was enthusiastic. “Overall, the sessions were all excellent,” wrote one participant. Watch the Transforming Chaplaincy newsletter for announcement of the dates for the 2020-21 Certificate.
